🌱 Give Yourself a Deadline

Give Yourself a Deadline.

Hello, Beautiful People.

Last week, I had coffee with a family friend.

She's worked for the same organization for over 21 years.

Twenty-one years.

As we talked, I asked her a simple question:

"How are you really doing?"

She paused.

Then she looked at me and said something that stayed with me.

"Dr. Dale... I'm tired."

Not tired because she doesn't love what she does.

Actually...

She still loves the work.

She loves serving people.

She loves making a difference.

What she's tired of is everything surrounding the work.

The culture.

The hostility.

The favoritism.

The lack of accountability.

The disrespect.

The micromanagement.

Watching some people be held accountable while others seem to get away with everything.

Feeling like her voice no longer matters.

Little by little...

The environment stole the joy she once felt walking through those doors every morning.

As she spoke, I realized something.

She wasn't burned out by the job.

She was emotionally exhausted by the culture.

There's a difference.

Then she shared something that made me smile.

She finally sat down with the CEO and had an honest conversation.

He asked her to give him until the end of December to turn things around.

And she agreed.

But then she said something that stopped me in my tracks.

"December 31, 2026, is my deadline."

Not his.

Hers.

She wasn't giving leadership an ultimatum.

She was giving herself permission.

Permission to stop waiting.

Permission to stop hoping that everyone else would change before she started living the life she wanted.

Permission to choose herself.

And I couldn't help but wonder...

How many of us are still waiting?

Waiting for the perfect boss.

Waiting for the promotion.

Waiting for someone to recognize our value.

Waiting for the relationship to improve.

Waiting for the family dynamic to change.

Waiting for the economy.

Waiting for confidence.

Waiting for "the right time."

Meanwhile...

Life keeps moving.

We're already well into the year.

Q3 is here.

And one thing emotional intelligence has taught me is this:

Hope is beautiful.

But hope without action can quietly become a place we hide.

Now, let me be clear.

This isn't about making emotional decisions or walking away the moment things get hard.

Sometimes staying is the right decision.

Sometimes fighting for change is worth it.

Sometimes organizations really do turn around.

But here's the question I want to leave you with:

How long are you willing to keep putting your life on hold while waiting for someone else to change?

Because whether it's a job...

A relationship...

A friendship...

Or even your own dream...

There comes a moment when you have to lovingly say:

"I've given this everything I have. Now it's time to give something back to myself."

So today, I want to challenge you.

Give yourself a deadline.

Not out of anger.

Not out of frustration.

But out of self-respect.

A deadline to:

  • update your résumé
  • start the business
  • apply for the promotion
  • have the difficult conversation
  • go back to school
  • seek counseling
  • ask for help
  • protect your peace
  • finally bet on yourself

Because deadlines create movement.

Without them...

Years have a way of quietly becoming decades.

Twenty-one years became twenty-two.

Twenty-two became twenty-five.

And before you know it, you've spent your life waiting for someone else to become the person you needed them to be.

Don't let that happen.

Maybe your deadline isn't about leaving.

Maybe it's about finally starting.

Either way...

Choose a date.

Write it down.

Tell someone you trust.

Then begin preparing for the life you're hoping to live.

Because the most important deadline you'll ever honor...

May be the one you give yourself.

So I'll leave you with one final question:

If nothing changed by this time next year... would you be okay with that?

If your answer is no...

Perhaps today is the day to stop waiting.

And start moving.

Join my leadership series starting early August and finally get started on your dreams on your own terms.

With gratitude,

Dr. Dale 💜

Why Your Silent Season May Be Your Most Important One Hello, Beautiful People. Can I just start by saying... Thank you. Thank you for reading.Thank you for subscribing.Thank you for sharing my content.Thank you for cheering me on.And thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your growth journey. These past few weeks, I've been a little quieter than usual. I traveled.I attended a few conferences.I spent precious time with family. And I intentionally gave myself permission to slow down......

"Little Habits" Big Mistakes There’s something I want you to sit with today. What if that thing you keep saying: “I need to stop doing that…” …is no longer “just a little habit”? What if it has quietly become: a pattern a comfort zone a coping mechanism or even a lifestyle you’ve unconsciously perfected over the years? Because after a while… 👉🏽 Repeated behavior stops being accidental. It becomes a choice we continue choosing. And that’s not judgment. That’s awareness. Sometimes we minimize...

I was about 17 when my grandmother died. That was almost 20 years ago now, and only later in life did I begin to realize just how much of her lives in me. The way I laugh. The way I ask questions. The way I care for people. The way I can be playful, nosy, bold, and deeply sentimental all at the same time. So much of who I am was shaped by the woman who helped raise me. Growing up as an Afro-Latina from Roatán, Honduras, I learned that love in our Caribbean homes does not always come wrapped...
