When Was The Last Time You Checked Your Leadership Reality?

Test Your Leadership Reality

A few years ago, I remember walking into a meeting already frustrated before anyone had even spoken.

Why?

Because someone had sent a short email earlier that morning:

“Can we talk later?”

That was it.

No context. No tone. No explanation.

And my mind immediately started building a story:

  • “Something must be wrong.”
  • “They’re upset with me.”
  • "What did their manager do now?"
  • “Did I miss something?”
  • “What happened?”

By the time the conversation actually happened, I had already emotionally reacted to a situation that didn’t even exist.

Turns out?

They simply wanted my opinion on a project.

Nothing was wrong at all.

And that moment reminded me of something powerful:

👉🏽 As leaders, we rarely respond to reality alone.
We respond to the story we create about reality.

That’s why reality testing matters.

Because leadership without reality testing is like driving through fog with your high beams on.

You think you’re helping yourself see clearer…
but in reality, the glare distorts everything in front of you.

Unchecked assumptions work the same way.

The more emotional we become without verifying the facts, the less clearly we see the situation.

And in leadership, unclear perception can damage:

  • communication
  • trust
  • decision-making
  • relationships

Emotional intelligence teaches us to pause and ask:

👉🏽 “What do I actually know to be true here?”

Not:
“What am I assuming?”

Not:
“What story am I telling myself?”

But:
👉🏽 “What are the facts?”

Because not every feeling tells the full story. Right?

And strong leaders don’t just react quickly…

👉🏽 They respond accurately. 💜

P.S. Feel free to share the love and send this to a friend or a manager you think can use it.

Not tired because she doesn't love what she does. Actually... She still loves the work. She loves serving people. She loves making a difference. What...
